There
are more parts in the typical compound bow than most people would
imagine. In fact, most compounds are put together with thirty or more
components. In their eagerness to get rolling, brand new bow companies
often seem to fail to address every one of those parts with the same
degree of seriousness. They may use just any old bowstring, any old
stabilizer insert or any old cable slide. The inevitable result is
bows that are not quite there yet. The phenomenon is so universal
that it’s become common practice to make allowances for brand new
bow companies and their not-quite-there-yet bows. But every once in
a blue moon, a brand new bow company pops up that adheres to a much
higher standard. They may be new, but they act like an old timer,
and their bows look, feel and shoot like proven performers. Ross Archery
of Grandview, Missouri, was founded in 2004, but it came out of the
chute like a champion. Its very first bows were really quite exceptional,
sporting an attention to detail that astounded many industry veterans.
In the last few weeks I’ve been putting a Ross Archery CR 334 through
its paces and I have to admit that I’m impressed. The CR 334 doesn’t
shoot at all like a not-quite-there-yet bow from a brand new bow company.
Instead, the Ross CR 334 handles and performs like a bow that has
been polished and perfected by years of experience. To understand
why that is, is to look much closer at all of the CR 334’s omponents.
The extra-long riser is beautifully machined and finished. Every edge
is nicely rounded. The bow’s relatively short, parallel limbs are
perfectly sculpted. The Ross one-cam eccentric system is oversized,
modular and sharp-looking. The bearing in both the top and bottom
eccentrics are sealed. The locking limb pockets are trim and sturdy.
The no-torque grip is nicely executed. The arrow shelf is extra wide
and features an unobtrusive broadhead guard. The cable slide is super-slick
Teflon. The bowstring and harness system are custom made by Winner’s
Choice. The bow is factoryequipped with Sims String Leeches and Sims
Ultra LimbSavers. The stabilizer bushings are stainless steel. Even
the color scheme––Realtree Hardwoods HD matched with pewter gray metalwork
and engraved Ross logos––is a winner. And throughout, the manufacturing
and assembly tolerances seem as tight as those found on the finest
bows available today. It’s as though a new car company made a Mercedes-
Benz with their very first try.
The Ross Archery CR 334 jumps right
into the mix of the best bows being made today.
KEY SELLING POINTS
•
EXTRA LONG MACHINED ALUMINUM RISER
There is no doubt that today’s most
popular, high-end compound bow look blends an extra-long machined
aluminum riser with short parallel limbs and oversized eccentrics.
The Ross CR 334 executes that configuration perfectly. Its extra-long
riser is sweeping in design, with no less than 16 cutouts. Mated to
that riser are attractively trim, machined-aluminum, pivoting limb
pockets that lock securely in place once the bow has adjusted for
draw weight. That pocket-locking feature is a very good idea on a
high-performance bow as it prevents unwanted pocket ovement and helps
dampen component vibration.
• PARALLEL LIMB CONFIGURATION
Parallel
limbs are much more than just a popular look. A well-executed parallel
limb configuration significantly reduces shot vibration and noise.
With such a limb configuration, the top limb moves upward at the moment
of release, while the lower limb moves downward. That equal-but-opposite
reaction goes a long way toward effectively canceling out shot vibration
in the bow.
• MODULAR ONE-CAM ECCENTRIC SYSTEM
The benefits derived
from a good one-cam system, like the Ross system, are many. With only
one drive cam, no eccentric timing issues exist, and that translates
into significantly easier tuning, especially with broadheads. Good
one cams are generally quiet, and that is certainly the case with
the Ross CR 334. This bow shoots with a pleasant whisper. In addition,
the Ross one-cam is modular, so draw length can be adjusted conveniently.
No bow press is needed to change modules and only two small screws
must be removed. I found that the Ross CR 334 shoots well with uncommon
ease. It draws with pleasing smoothness, generates good arrow speed,
is wonderfully quiet and delivers exceptional accuracy. • NO-TORQUE
ACCURACY GRIP The grip on the Ross CR 334 is smallthroated, flat-backed
and nicely angled. Two small laminated wood side plates add class
and a bit of shape. In other words, the Ross grip is specifically
designed for torque reduction, repeatability and accuracy. I found
it a very forgiving grip to shoot. • BROADHEAD GUARD The sight window
and shelf on the Ross CR 334 are extra-wide. That provides a great
view of the target and extra arrow clearance. The shelf also includes
an addon, machined-aluminum broadhead guard. Should your hunting arrow
ever slip from your arrow rest, the guard prevents broadhead contact
with your bowhand. A little extra safety is always a good thing. •
WINNER’S CHOICE STRING AND CABLE Too many otherwise fine bows fall
down because of sub-par bowstrings and cables. When many top archers
want to replace their harness system with something better, they often
reach for a professional-grade bowstring and cable system from Winner’s
Choice Custom Bowstrings. Winner’s Choice systems are known for their
quality, durability and remarkable resistance to stretch and creep.
The Ross CR 334 comes factory-equipped with a Winner’s Choice custom
bowstring and cable. • HIGH QUALITY EXTRAS Plenty of other high quality
extras are strategically sprinkled about the Ross
Archery CR 334. The
cable slide is no ordinary plastic cable slide. Instead, it’s
machined
from super-slippery, quietTeflon. The stabilizer inserts (there are
two,
one front and one back) are not soft brass, but are much harder
stainless steel. The bearings in each eccentric are sealed so that
no further lubing is ever required. On the Winner’s Choice bowstring
are Sims String Leeches silencers. On the CR 334’s limbs are Sims
Ultra LimbSavers.
CLOSING THE SALE
A bow is the sum of its
parts. The CR 334 is first rate because it’s assembled right
with the
highest quality components. Consumers will undoubtedly be initially
attracted to the high-tech look of the Ross CR 334’s extra-long machined
aluminumriser, parallel limbs and oversize eccentrics. It’s a very
popular look.
Your job, however, will be to detail what’s beyond that
look by drilling down to the particulars of the CR 334’s components
and performance. Highlight the CR 334’s long sweeping riser, parallel
limb configuration, easy-tuning one-cam system, notorque grip, safety-oriented
broadhead guard and professional-grade bowstring
and cable system.
Then let them feel for themselves just how well this bow draws and
shoots: smooth, reasonably fast, quiet and accurate. The Ross CR 334
is a fairly new bow that acts like it’s been around for years.
